Crash Course for Manager Series

Managers often travel uncharted waters when faced with employment issues as they are not necessarily part of their day-to-day expertise in managing people. And they must do so in the context of Federal and State laws, Lehigh policies, best practices, and doing the right things for the right reasons. Meet with colleagues and Human Resources to navigate the course and avoid near misses and collisions. Come and listen, share, and get answers to questions that bubble under the surface in your world as supervisors to staff. This course is beneficial to seasoned, nearly new, or potential managers of people at Lehigh. The topics change throughout the year to give a well-rounded update to employment law and your specific situations.

Crucial Conversations

Whenever you're not getting the results you're looking for, it's likely that a crucial conversation is keeping you stuck. Whatever the problem, if you can't talk honestly with nearly anybody about almost anything, you can expect poor results. Make crucial conversations skills your best practices and everything gets better:

  • Resolve disagreements
  • Build acceptance rather than resistance
  • Speak persuasively, not abrasively
  • Foster teamwork.

Led by HR’s certified trainers, Crucial Conversations is offered several times each year. It is a multi-part course that requires a total time commitment of about 16 hours.

Crucial Accountability

This course is for you if you’ve been disappointed by others’ performance and want to be able to hold them accountable in a way that’s both firm and respectful. Or if you’re tired of working in an environment where goals are set and assignments are given, and then people treat their assignments as rough guidelines rather than firm commitments. Or perhaps in your own work group failed deadlines are met with hostile looks and vague comments instead of honest, direct discussion. In short, if you want to learn how to hold others accountable, or as a leader you want to help create a culture where everyone speaks honestly, clearly, and respectfully about violated expectations, this course is your next logical choice. This is an 8-hour course conducted in half-day sessions.  [Prerequisite: Completed course of Crucial Conversations]

IBH Workshops

Lehigh's Employee Assistance Program provicer, Integrated Behavioral Health, presents on-campus workshops and seminars on a variety of subjects. Recent program topics have included stress management, caring for aging parents, and tips for parents of adolescents.

Inclusion Insights

Every staff member at Lehigh plays a role in the maintenance and enhancement of a diverse and inclusive work environment and community. Inclusion Insights will show you how to use creativity and innovation (one of Lehigh’s Success Factors) to contribute to our Equitable Community by seeking different perspectives, new ideas, knowledge and experiences. This program incorporates the diversity expertise of Dr. Steve Robbins, gifted speaker and story teller.

Learning the Institution

Whether you have been at Lehigh for 2 months, 2 years or 20 years, there are parts of this large system you are unfamiliar with. Learning the Institution is an academic year-long program that gives participants a view into the inner workings of the various departments, stems, colleges, and other areas that make up the university. The group meets bi-weekly from September through May and registration is capped at 25 – so it’s good to register early.
