Performance Review Process

New Staff Employees
New staff employees (and current employees beginning a new position within Lehigh) have a six month provisional period in which supervisors are asked to provide adequate training, monitor employees work, and deliver ongoing coaching and feedback. Towards the end of a new employee's provisional period, the supervisor is asked to complete a provisional report which is shared with the employee. The provisional report focuses on the key accountabilities of the position.

Current Staff Employees
Staff and supervisors are required to meet four times a year to discuss the employee’s performance. The fourth meeting should be a summary of the previous meetings and time to discuss plans for the next year.
Employees and supervisors are expected to document progress and outcomes for Key Accountabilities, Success Factors and goals. The self-appraisal and supervisor's assessment sets the stage for a performance discussion to review results and start planning for the next performance period.

Research Employees
Research employees (research scientists, research engineers, research associates, and research interns) may also be asked to participate in the annual appraisal process at their department's and/or supervisor's request. The process is the same as for classified staff. However, your appraisal will focus on project goals and assignments rather than key accountabilities.

Performance Feedback
Human Resources provides the following resources to document your performance feedback.

Performance Draft Book

This booklet includes items such as the Success Factors and Lehigh's core values. It is designed to offer expandable space in which to capture your performance feedback and draft your goals

Performance Feedback Form

Supervisors should use this form to record their assessments of an employee's performance. The form helps to summarize the results of your quarterly performance meetings with each of your employees.

Self-Assessment Form

The self-assessment form is an optional step employees can take to organize their thoughts in advance of a performance feedback meeting.

Your Position Description (PD)

It's important to be familiar with your PD to prepare for performance feedback. Your PD provides the road map for your discussion.
