A job family is a group of jobs in which the work performed is of a similar nature. Job families are used for comparing skills and responsibilities of similar jobs for the purpose of determining salary ranges for non-benchmark jobs.
It’s important not to confuse the term “job family” with department designations. Most departments will have positions representing multiple job families.
For example, a non-benchmark accounting position in the Development Office would be compared to other benchmark jobs within the university’s Finance/Accounting job family, rather than to jobs in the Development/Fund Raising job family.
